Google releases Gems, custom versions of Gemini. Gems is a new feature akin to ChatGPT’s custom GPTs, that lets you customize Gemini. You can write instructions for a Gem, and give it a name, then chat to it when you want. If you find yourself using the same prompt over and over, Gems are a convenient way to save time.
Gems is available to anyone with a Gemini Advanced subscription.
Why it matters If you or your team are using Gemini regularly, creating Gems for specific tasks which be a productivity booster. Admittedly, Google is kinda late to the party here. ChatGPT has had GPTs since the beginning of the year and Claude has had Projects for a couple of months already (which can do similar things, and is easier to collaborate on).

OpenAI and Anthropic sign agreement on model testing with the US Government. The two companies have signed deals with the US AI Safety Institute, allowing them to test the AI companies’ models before public release. They’ll also collaborate on research on new capabilities of their AI models and their associated risks. The US Institute also collaborates with a similar Government AI safety institute in the UK.
we are happy to have reached an agreement with the US AI Safety Institute for pre-release testing of our future models.
for many reasons, we think it's important that this happens at the national level. US needs to continue to lead!

Also, please, can someone make this happen:
we need a Steve Carell series about the US government AI safety department testing frontier models

Why it matters The US Government will have access to models from the two biggest AI companies in the world before anyone else. Is this the way forward towards responsible AI, or a mere barrier to competition? I’m curious what happens if the Government says no to a new release or features.

Meta is the leading open-source AI player. Meta’s Llama models are approaching 350 million downloads, with doubled usage since the release of Llama 3.1 in May. This makes the Llama family of models the biggest open-source ecosystem for building with AI, aligning well with Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of becoming the best architecture for building AI apps on in the long-term.
You can chat with Meta’s models on meta.ai or start building with the API.
Why it matters Meta’s Llamas is the most popular free alternative to build AI products, and its growing fast. It’ll be interesting to see whether or not they can pull off this vision financially; closed companies are currently monetising their products while Meta is betting on the long-term network effects.
