🧙🏼 NotebookLM for business

Also: Perplexity's internal search for businesses

Howdy, wizards.

If you’re a teacher curious on how to assess learning in this day and age where AI can generate top responses in seconds, someone on LinkedIn shared this useful post-AI learning taxonomy.

Here’s the most interesting things happening in AI today.

DARIO’S PICKS

Google’s buzzy tool NotebookLM is officially out of its experimental phase, and is getting some hot new features.

They just added customization for the Audio Overviews feature. You know that thing you’ve been seeing around social media which lets you make a podcast of anything in one click? That’s Audio Overviews. And you can now steer the AI hosts’ discussion, for example by focusing on specific topics or adjusting their expertise level, before generating the podcast.

Google is also rolling out a pilot with NotebookLM business. By default, it does not use your data to train their models. While 80,000 orgs are already using the free version of NotebookLM, the Business plan is currently a pilot which you have to apply for. Google will share more information on availability and pricing later this year.

They’re suggesting a few business use cases, of which I found the following most interesting (the below is highly paraphrased by me):

  • Drag-and-drop all your important files into NotebookLM, and use it as centralized knowledge base for your team, where they can get the information they need without spending time asking around for it.

  • Create engaging onboarding and training material by putting your boring manuals, guidelines and docs into NotebookLM.

  • Drop your FAQs and product documentation into NotebookLM and share the link as a useful and engaging help center for customers.

‎ Why it matters‎ ‎ NotebookLM is turning out to be a massive success for Google. They launched something uniquely useful with the Audio Overviews feature, and it’s finding applications way beyond just entertainment. The ability to steer the output and the additional privacy of the business plan makes it an even stronger candidate for businesses looking for easy and effective ways to apply AI.

Earlier this week Perplexity launched new search for finance, and now – they’ve launched two features aimed at enhancing research and collaboration for businesses and teams:

  • Internal Knowledge Search: Perplexity Pro and Enterprise users can now search their own internal knowledge bases, in addition to the web. Perplexity gives you access controls over who can access your files, keeping it secure within your team. Pro users have to actively opt-out of AI training for their files in their settings(!), while this is default for Enterprise customers.

    • A use case example from an early tester in financial services is doing more robust due diligence by combining internal research, call notes and web search of the latest industry news.

  • Perplexity Spaces is a collaboration hub that can be customized for specific use cases. Reminds me a lot of Claude’s Projects, but with the ability to choose AI models from different providers. You can invite collaborators, connect internal files, and customize the AI with specific instructions.

‎ Why it matters‎ ‎ You’ve got to give it to Perplexity—despite being sued left and right (this week they got a cease and desist from NYT), they’re shipping features solid features. This seems especially useful for small businesses that don’t have the developer resources to build advanced RAG solutions from scratch. The ability to drag and drop files into a secure, collaborative space makes it easier to build a knowledge base for your company.

They’re also planning to add third-party data integrations with Crunchbase and FactSet for Enterprise customers, allowing to search their proprietary datasets. I think they could quickly become the go-to for SMBs looking towards AI that need accuracy and depth in their research.

3. Smaller updates for ChatGPT and Claude

  • OpenAI released an early version of the ChatGPT app for Windows. It’s currently only available to Plus, Team, Edu and Enterprise users (ie all paid subscriptions). It includes a shortcut (Alt + Space) for faster access to ChatGPT.

  • Anthropic just rolled out support for Claude Projects on mobile. They’ve also launched a new look for their mobile app, and made it available on iPad, too.

‎ Why it matters‎ ‎ These are smaller updates but will be impactful for ChatGPT users that are on Windows, and the folks using Claude Projects – which can now do so on-the-go.

I’m on Mac so can’t test the ChatGPT Windows app, but hopefully it also includes dictation. Voice-typing is still the number one reason I use the ChatGPT app on Mac.
