🧙🏼 GPT-4o is #1 again

Howdy, wizards.

Here’s what’s brewing in AI today.

DARIO’S PICKS

GPT-4o got a upgrade. Honestly, the details by OpenAI are pretty vague, but it seems the move was primarily intended to dethrone the Google’s new model Gemini-Exp-1114, which briefly climbed to the top of the LLM leaderboard eariler this week.

The biggest leap was in creative writing. The latest GPT-4o version has gone from #2 to number one for the overall rank, as well as for hard prompts, creative writing and coding. It also goes up from #4 to #3 when it comes to math.

The latest Gemini model now ranks second overall.

‎ Why it matters‎ ‎ As suspected, Google’s attempted coup of the #1 spot on the lmarena leaderboard was short lived, and OpenAI has resumed the throne.

NVIDIA’s Q3 earnings call revealed that their latest flagship AI servers, Blackwell, are in “full production” and “full steam” ahead; this comes despite earlier rumours of cooling issues. It has already shipped 13,000 Blackwell samples to customers this quarter.

Overall, Q3 revenue was $35.1 billion (+94% y-o-y), driven particularly by growth for their AI-infused data centers. They also remain highly profitable, generating $19.3 billion in earnings. While NVIDIA’s roots is from the gaming industry, this division now represents merely $2-3 billion of quarterly revenue for the company.

NVIDIA’s H200 chips (the “must-have” GPU for AI, launched last year), are now the company’s fastest-selling product ever, constituting multiple billions in revenue alone this past quarter.

While the company’s Q3 revenue beat expectations, their stock price took a small dip – with investors voicing concerns about the company’s capacity to meet growing demand with an adequate supply.

‎ Why it matters‎ ‎ NVIDIA is likely the biggest winner of the AI boom; with hardware that all the leading AI companies depend on, paired with crucial software. Other well-known chipmakers AMD and Intel are shifting their strategies to AI as well, but struggling to keep up.

Perplexity just launched a feature that lets you read live transcripts from earnings calls, as well as key highlights. Transcripts and highlights are remain accessible inside the company’s dedicated dashboard in Perplexity. They’re starting with NVIDIA, whom held their Q3 earnings call yesterday (more on that below), but will support all the major stocks soon.

The earnings call feature comes on top of the upgrades to finance-related queries that Perplexity did last month, including interactive dashboard with real-time stock quotes, detailed financial statements and the ability to customise charts.

‎ Why it matters‎ ‎ I think the earnings call transcripts will be widely used for high-level research by investors and researchers – paired with Perplexity’s finance dashboards, it also makes it way easier to digest the information in context.

I’m saying it again – Perplexity might be winning the race to the best user interface for AI, by focusing on rapid, meaningful UX upgrades rather than the costly pursuit of training the largest models.

THAT’S ALL FOLKS!
