My email software was down for much of the day – so it’ll be a short (hopefully good) one for today.

The most important news stories in AI this week

  1. YouTube’s new AI features for creators. YouTube held their Made on YouTube event this week. They announced several new features coming to the platform over the next months. Most are centred around making it easier for creators to produce and monetise great content, as well as new ways to make connections with their audiences. Arguably the most hyped feature is – well, Hype. It’s a sort of “supervote” that can be used on channels with subscriber counts below 500k to make it easier for smaller channels to grow. Very cool! For all the updates, see here.

Below, I’ll summarise the AI-powered tools that were announced at the event:

    • Dream screen: Initially, this is just AI-generated image and video backgrounds for YouTube Shorts. Soon though – Google Deepmind’s most capable video model, Veo, will be integrated into YouTube Shorts (later this year). This will enable creators to generate up to six second video clips to use directly in Shorts.

    • Aloud: An AI-dubbing tool that doesn’t just translate, but dubs with an emotive and natural voice. YouTube has already had this in the works for a while but is now expanding to new languages including French and Italian.

    • AI Insights: Video ideas and outline suggestions based on what your channels’ audience is already watching

    • Assistive Search in Creator Music: AI-assisted search to make it easier to find the right music for your videos

    • AI-enhanced reply suggestions: Gives creators reply-suggestions in their own tone of voice, making it easier to reply faster and to more people

  • ‎ Why it matters‎ ‎ YouTube, powered by Veo, is pioneering AI video generation for the masses. I expect Instagram and TikTok announcing similar features in the near future. Overall, cool to see how they’ve applied AI in so many helpful ways for creators.

  1. SocialAI: Twitter, just with you and millions of AI bots. SocialAI is a new app that looks like Twitter/X, but you start with tons of AI bot followers – no other humans allowed. Anything you post get thousands of replies. Some cheer yo on, other play devil’s advocate or flat out attack you. You pick what kind of followers you want e.g. “nerds”, “skeptics”, “visionaries”.

Some people describe it as like an echo chamber for your thoughts, and claim it’s kind of addictive. If you dare to try, you can find it here.

now we can all know what Elon Musk feels like after acquiring Twitter for $44 billion, but without having to spend $44 billion.

  • ‎ Why it matters‎ ‎ The app taps into the fact that many people want to feel heard, and on regular social media, most don’t get much attention. I have Black Mirror-esque feelings about this.
